Rhodes University Statistics Postgraduate Programmes

The Statistics Department offers Mathematical Statistics Honours as well as Joint Mathematical Statistics Honours. To be eligible to read towards either degree, students are required to attain at least 65% on average, where no module or component is less than 60%, in their undergraduate third year Mathematical Statistics course(s). Students are strongly encouraged to take at least Mathematics II in their undergraduate studies. Mathematical Statistics Honours students are required to complete four modules to the value of 70% for the Honours degree and complete a research project to the value of 30%. The multivariate analysis and generalized linear model modules are compulsory. Subject to staff availability, students are allowed to choose two modules from various courses, for example from simulation and bootstrap methods, sampling methods, risk theory, stochastic calculus in finance, stochastic process etc. (not all these are offered each year). The research project includes an oral presentation to the staff and postgraduate students in the Department of Statistics. At the discretion of the Head of Department of Statistics, a student may include modules from Pure or Applied Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science or any other approved subject to read towards the joint honours degree. At most 40% of the final mark may be obtained from other departments and the research component of the degree must be supervised by a member of staff in the Department of Statistics.

Masters in the Faculties of Science (MSc) or Commerce (MCom)

Students who attain at least 65% in their Honours degree are encouraged to proceed to research degrees under the direction of the staff of the Department. The Master’s degree is taken by thesis (100%). Unfortunately due to staff constraints the department is not currently able to offer a Masters by combination of coursework and associated examinations (50%) (4 modules) and a thesis (50%). A student may also be required to take an oral examination.

Applications are made on-line at the following url:   https://ross.ru.ac.za/pgadmissions. Internal applicants, that are current Rhodes students, please use your standard Rhodes user-name and password. External applicants please register first by clicking on the register button.

Applicants are required to upload transcripts of their previous qualifications and project proposals (Masters and PhD students only) through the online facility. The final outcome of the application will be communicated to that applicant via either a letter or email sent from the Registrar’s Division.
