List of courses funded by Nsfas 2022. Nsfas is a Fully subsidized free higher education and training for poor and working-class South Africans. As of the 2021 academic year, NSFAS will no longer provide funding for postgraduate courses.
This includes postgraduate certificates, postgraduate diplomas, honors degrees, and masters and Ph.D. degrees. Students who were funded in 2020 for any of the 2020 NSFAS-funded postgraduate qualifications will be granted continued funding in 2021 for the completion of the course.

Application open and Closing Date
The National Students Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) online application 2022-2024 academic year opens 1st of September and closes 30th of November 2022. All those who want to apply for NSFAS online in 2022 should visit www.nsfas.org.za.to apply for the National Financial Aid Scheme funding. No late Applications will be accepted for NSFAS for the 2022 academic year.
Which field of study is your first choice?
NSFAS covers students who attend or hope to attend public Universities and TVET colleges, but which courses does the bursary not fund? The National Student Financial Aid Scheme, also known as NSFAS, administers bursaries in partnership with the government to help students reach their full potential through furthering their studies.
These are the courses NSFAS does not Fund;
- Short courses
- Courses that are offered at a private college or private higher education institution.
- Part-time studies
- Postgraduate studies
- Second degrees
NSFAS will not fund students who want to enroll in any of these courses. They may, however, submit a request for money from other sources. These sources include student loans from South African banks and Fundi Educational Loans. Fundi specializes in educational loans to help students cover their tuition fees and any other expenses involved during studying.

Only first undergraduate qualifications are funded by NSFAS, including full-time and online courses offered by public universities or TVET colleges.
Students need to meet the following criteria to qualify for NSFAS:
University students
- Must be a South African citizen or permanent resident.
- Sassa grant beneficiaries immediately qualify.
- Must be applying or accepted at a university
- Persons with a disability should have a combined household income of R600 000 or less per annum.
- Should have a combined household income below R350 000 per year.
TVET Colleges
- Must be a South African citizen or permanent resident.
- Must be registered or intending to register on a PLP, NC(V), or Report 191 program at a TVET College.
- Should have a combined household income below R350 000 per year.
- Persons with a disability should have a combined household income of R600 000 or less per annum.
- Returning students must demonstrate proven and accepted academic performance in line with the College’s progression policy or the progression prescriptions of the Bursary Rules and Guidelines.
- Must not be enrolling for a qualification that duplicates previous learning that was state-funded.
The bursary covers registration fees, tuition, accommodation, transport, learning materials allowance, and living expense allowances.
