In our honours year, we offer 9 different courses. To complete an honours in mathematics or applied mathematics students can choose 6 courses among the 9 offered and must complete one honours project in addition.

The courses currently offered are:

  • Algebraic Graph Theory
  • Analytical Mechanics
  • Artificial Neural Networks
  • General Relativity
  • Matrix Groups
  • Measure Theory
  • Numerical Modelling
  • Stochastic Processes
  • Topology

See here for more details.

Masters and PhD

If you are interested in pursuing MScPhD(or postdoctoral) studies in this Department, you should contact the academic staff member with whom you would like to study, since we offer these qualifications by thesis only.

When you do contact a potential supervisor, please write about the topic in which you would like to pursue research, as well as your background in that topic.

The current areas of research interests in the Department are:

  • Computational methods in general relativity and cosmology – in particular, gravitational radiation from black hole events. (N.T. BishopD. Pollney)
  • General relativity, cosmology and fluid dynamics – in particular, large scale structure formation, black hole accretion, gravitational lensing, astrophysical fluid dynamics.  (A.J. John)
  • Computational and mathematical relativity – in particular, initial boundary value problems for the Einstein equations, the conformal field equations and global properties/asymptotic structure of space-times, gravitational waves and their self-interaction, black holes (C. Stevens)
  • Functional analysis; measure theory.(A.L. Pinchuck)
  • Geometry; geometric control theory. (C.C. Remsing)
  • Graph Theory; Combinatorics. (E. Andriantiana)
