Introduction

The U.S. Consulate in Cape Town is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for a position of Chauffeur in the Executive Office.

Basic Function of Position

Safely operates a fully armored vehicle (FAV) to transport the Consul General (CG) within the city and the surrounding areas.

Ensures vehicle in clean and serviceable condition and performs minor preventive maintenance.

Required Qualifications

Education

Completion of high school education is required.

Work Experience

Minimum of three (3) years of experience in driving is required. Professional driving experience as part of an automotive fleet company is required.

Language

English level III (Good Working Knowledge) Reading/Writing/Speaking is required.

Job Knowledge

Must know Mission’s protocol procedures as it relates to the Front Office. State Department vehicle safety standards. Motor pool rules and regulations. Knowledge of the location of other Missions, host Government institutions, and NGOs. Knowledge of local traffic laws and regulations. Knowledge of in-country travel routes and areas. General awareness of the general political climate in the country related to protests, demonstrations, and riots. Must have a good working knowledge of the extended Cape Town metropolitan area and good knowledge of the consular district served by U.S. Consulate Cape Town and its environs, including driving routes and traffic patterns. Must be familiar with the location of hospitals, police and fire stations within assigned duty areas and the immediate surroundings.

Skills and Abilities

Must hold a valid and legally obtained Code 10 (C1) with valid PDP (Professional Drivers Permit) endorsement on driver’s license. Operates level C or D armored vehicle with defensive driving skills are required. Must be competent in diagnosing and handling preventive maintenance and first-echelon automotive repairs. Ability to detect vehicle defects and report immediately to authorities concerned. Must quickly and calmly evaluate risks and alternative actions always assuring the maximum safety of the principle passenger. Must be able to deal with high level officials in a relaxed and competent manner. Must have basic computer skills to maintain reports and for communication purposes.
