How Does Funza Lushaka Work
The Funza Lushaka Bursary Online Application for the 2022-2024 Academic year will be open on 1 October 2022 and close on 11 February 2022. Therefore, those who wish to apply for Funza Lushaka Bursary must prepare to apply on time before the application deadline for 2022
The Funza Lushaka Bursary Initiative is a multi-year program that encourages people to pursue teaching as a career. The bursaries are awarded to students who are pursuing a teaching certification in a priority area.
To be eligible for the bursary, you must be enrolled in or planning to enroll in a public institution to pursue a Bachelor of Education (BEd) or a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE).
Funza Lushaka Requirements 2022-2024
The Funza Lushaka Bursary covers all university expenditures so you may focus on your academics without worrying about money.
They include the following areas:
- Tuition fees
- Accommodation including meals
- Books and learning materials
- A possible small allowance for monthly living expenses
To be eligible for the Funza Lushaka Bursary, you must meet the following requirements:
- learners, currently in Grade 12
- graduates who want to complete a teaching qualification (enroll for a PGCE)
- people who want to make a career change and become teachers
- unemployed people who want to become teachers.
Applicants must first be accepted into the appropriate study program at a recognized higher education institution.
The department considers which disciplines are being studied when choosing who should be picked for the bursary. Only if two of the priority area disciplines are included as a specialization in the teaching qualification will the bursary be provided.
Students enrolled in online, distance or part-time education are also eligible for the Funza Lushaka Bursary, provided they meet all other qualifying requirements.
The bursary is provided for one academic year at a time, and after demonstrating academic performance, the bursary may consider renewing each year until the bursary recipient has qualified as a teacher.
The student is, nevertheless, obligated to apply for the bursary renewal every year.
The bursary awardees will have to teach in a public school for the same number of years as they received the bursary.

Only students who meet the following requirements will be forced to repay their bursary:
- if the recipient fails to qualify
- registers for a course of study that is not in a designated priority area
- fails to apply for a teaching post with a Provincial Education Department at a public school, following the stipulated processes
- fails to take up a teaching post with a Provincial Education Department at a public school
- leaves a teaching post with a Provincial Education Department before the end of the contracted service period
- fails to meet a requirement of the bursary agreement
You must then repay the full amount of the bursary received, plus interest, in accordance with the program’s requirements.
Those who live in rural areas and plan to teach in rural areas after completing their studies will be given priority.
A student can only be sponsored by Funza Lushaka, and any other bursaries must be forfeited.
Alternatively, if the terms and circumstances of the other bursary permit, the student may keep that bursary if the Funza Lushaka bursary’s stipulations for placement on completion of studies take precedence.
