Introduction

We are looking for a socio-economic development and stakeholder relations specialist to manage a regional office in Emalahleni,Mpumalanga and to make leading contributions to the prosperity of mining companies, mining host communities in the region.

Duties & Responsibilities

The incumbent reports to the Head: Social Performance within the Public Affairs and Transformation Department. Working with member companies in Mpumalanga, the role entails the following key outcomes:

  • Identification of key stakeholders and development and maintenance of up-to-date regional stakeholder maps
  • Development and implementation of a regional stakeholder engagement strategy
  • Promotion of best practices and innovation in socio-economic development (SED) among mining companies
  • Implementation of standards and protocols adopted by the Organisation relating to SED, human rights, stakeholder management, etc.
  • Liaison with internal, external and international industry experts and other stakeholders
  • Facilitation of the sharing of key development-related information such as Stats SA data, spatial data, needs assessments, Social and Labour Plans (SLPs), Integrated Development Plans (IDPs), Environmental Management Plans and other related data.
  • Fostering of collaboration initiatives and partnerships between mining companies and other commercial and social entities relating to development in mining areas and the region
  • Leveraging of government and donor funding to support mining company and industry SED initiatives
  • Support for local economic development initiatives including liaising with and influencing of senior management within mines and government officials
  • Facilitation of access to mining companies and the Organisation for stakeholders, and vice versa
  • Management of the administrative, financial and other elements of the regional office
  • Reporting on activities to Head of Department: Social Performance and Senior Executive on a regular basis

Desired Experience & Qualification

Capability to perform in the role (Role Requirements)

To succeed in this role, you need to have knowledgeof and proven ability to operate at a senior level in the field of stakeholder relations and socio-economic development including:

  • Experience in managing complex and dynamic socio-political relationships
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation as it pertains to mining and ability to navigate and analyse the political and legislative landscape.
  • Track record in developing and delivering strategic social management plans for businesses and operations.
  • Practical experience of working at site level in mining companies and with municipalities.
  • Experience of managing people, teams or groups in challenging circumstances.
  • Personal knowledge of key role players in the region.
  • Exposure to multi-stakeholder management processes, including but not limited to non-governmental organisations (NGOs), local and provincial government, traditional authorities, business partners and communities.
  • A clear and comprehensive understanding of the impact of government policy on the mining industry.
  • Ability to develop stakeholder management strategies and supporting processes.
  • Extensive experience developing networks and maintaining relations with governments (local and provincial and national), policy makers and other key decision makers

 

Qualifications:

  • Tertiary qualifications in social and economic sciences or related disciplines (a post-graduate qualification will be an advantage)
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in corporate and/or public spheres relating to SED or stakeholder relations
  • Effective influencing skills when engaging with senior leaders internally and externally
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated proficiency across a wide variety of audiences and constituencies

  • Willingness to travel regularly to mine sites and government offices
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize and organize a number of concurrent projects under tight time pressure and within allocated budgets
  • Ability to work both independently and in teams.
