ABOUT THE COMPANY – JAKES GERWEL FELLOWSHIP

Jakes Gerwel Fellowship, founded in 2017, is fully funded by the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation Endowment and named in honour of Professor Jakes Gerwel, a teacher, educational leader and close confidant of the late Nelson Mandela.
Scholarship beneficiaries commence their studies at the University of Pretoria or the University of Cape Town, towards a Bachelor of Arts, Science or Commerce degree. Apart from full funding, students also have access to personal coaches, mentors and expert teachers. When students have completed their 3-year degree, they qualify as high school teachers through a PGCE and are placed in partner schools.

ABOUT THE BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED & COVERAGE VALUE

The Jakes Gerwel Fellowship will be providing 2 types of full university scholarships:
1) Undergraduate Teacher Fellowship: applicable to current Grade 12, gap year and 1st-year level students.
2) Graduate Teacher Fellowship: applicable to final year students.

The fellowship will provide cover for the following expenses: tuition fees, book allowance, tutor allowance, meal allowance, accommodation and a monthly stipend. Students will also receive the services of an Expert Teacher Mentor Personal Coach and Academic Support Leadership Development.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

Undergraduate Teacher Fellowship:

  • South African Citizenship OR a South African permanent resident with an SA ID number
  • Under 23 years old on the closing date (20 July 2020)
  • Currently in Matric OR have completed Matric and on a gap year OR currently in the 1st year of University
  • Current Matric students: must have achieved a minimum overall average of 65% for Grade 11 final results (excluding Life Orientation)
  • Current Gap Year students: must have achieved a minimum overall average of 65% for Grade 12 final results (excluding Life Orientation)
  • Current 1st Year University students: must have achieved a minimum overall average of 65% for Grade 12 final results (excluding Life Orientation) AND must demonstrate the ability to maintain a minimum overall average of 60% for 1st-year degree studies
  • Candidate Fellows must complete a 3-year bachelor’s degree at one of the following institutes: University of Pretoria/ University of Cape Town
  • Candidate Fellows must go on to complete a PGCE qualification
  • Candidate Fellows must teach at a South African high school after completion of the PGCE qualification
  • Apply to both the University of Pretoria (before 30 September 2020) and University of Cape Town (31 July 2020) for 2021 studies

Graduate Teacher Fellowship:

  • South African Citizenship OR a South African permanent resident with an SA ID number
  • Under 30 years old on the closing date (20 July 2020)
  • Candidate Fellows must teach at a South African high school after completion of the PGCE qualification
  • Apply to partner universities (the University of Pretoria, University of Cape Town, University of Johannesburg and University of Witwatersrand) for academic study and placement for 2021 studies

Undergraduate Teacher Fellowship:

  • ID document OR South African permanent residence (certified copy)
  • Current Matric students: Grade 11 final results AND Matric latest results (certified copies)
  • Current Gap Year students: Matric certificate (certified copy)
  • Current 1st Year University students: Matric certificate AND full tertiary academic record (certified copies)
  • Proof of application to study at UP and UCT

Graduate Teacher Fellowship:

  • ID document OR South African permanent residence (certified copy)
  • Full tertiary academic record (certified copies)
  • Proof of application to study at UP, UCT, UJ and WITS
