Introduction

Our client in the mining industry is looking for a Mine Overseer to join their team in Koffiefontein.

 

Reporting to the Manager: Mining, the role will co-ordinate and manage the mining activities and resources within a section to achieve all required targets and to ensure effective communication between all stakeholders and ensure safety and health of employees.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Ensure that the monthly production planning for the relevant section is done and executed in line with requirements of the approved annual mining business plan.
  • Review and set production objectives in line with the implementation and adherence to the relevant legislation, policies and procedures.
  • Oversee, enforce and review inspections of working places, materials, products and equipment to detect defects, noncompliance or malfunctions and implement corrective measures to mitigate risks and achieve planned targets.
  • Co-ordinate the delivery of section appointed for within agreed safety performance, timelines, budget and quality. Control and co-ordinate all activities to achieve optimum production throughput, process efficiency, product security and information integrity.
  • Provide input into the departmental budget.
  • Manage the budget for the area of responsibility.
  • Responsible for the generation of cost saving ideas.
  • Provide mining expertise and skills to the operation; advising on mining solutions to enhance or ensure the effectiveness of the operation.
  • Ensure capacity and bench strength of functional talent pool by coordinating, directing and leading mining talent in area of responsibility.
  • Engage internal and external stakeholders on mining related matters, and support the operation on mining related engagement.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships and an effective / sound communication system within the operation.
  • Ensure that all Mining reporting is aligned with standards, guidelines and schedules.
  • Coordinate, control the preparation and ensure the timeous reporting of production results, records and reports.
  • Review and analyse progressive production performance statistics and investigate action plans to mitigate deviations to ensure the effective achievement of the annual production plan.
  • Evaluate and implement mining production processes, systems, products or new developments to integrate opportunities and mitigate deficiencies to ensure continuous improvement and alignment to mining best practice, policies and plans.
  • Collaborate with the relevant stakeholders to implement the organisation’s risk management plan, schedule risk assessments and draw up action plans to minimise or eliminate operational risks.
  • Drafting, reviewing, enforcing of Activity Based Risk assessments, Safe working procedures and MCOPs
  • Implement and manage the area of responsibility plan as signed off by the Appointed Manager
  • Safety, Health and Environment: Model behaviour that is consistent with the Company Vision and Values.
  • Responsible to ensure that the mining teams are adequately trained and refreshed in line with the standards set by the Mine.

Desired Experience & Qualification

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Grade 12 / Standard 10
  • Blasting Certificate OR National Certificate Rock breaking Underground Hard Rock Level 3
  • Mine Overseers Certificate of Competence
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience as a shiftboss in an underground environment
  • Computer Literacy and Microsoft Office Suite (Intermediate)
  • Valid driver’s license

 

 

ADVANTAGE:

  • B Tech Diploma or B Sc Degree in Mining Engineering
  • Leadership Development Programme (LDP) OR equivalent
  • Knowledge and experience in mechanised mining practices  Knowledge and experience in massive mining practices

 

OTHER SKILLS / COMPETENCIES:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill of all applicable policies, procedures, legislative requirements, principles and practices regarding the operational and production plan.
  • Having knowledge and skill to analyse technical data and to perform trend analysis.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill in resource management principles and practices and being able to apply corrective action where problems and risk occur.
  • Convert manpower requirements, tonnage requirements, and equipment / machinery availability back to the operation plan.
  • Implement and follow-up on corrective measures as and when applicable regarding the production plan.
  • Advise on mining design progress and status according to the execution and compliance to the required operational plan.
