Rhodes University Post Graduate Diploma in Economic Journalism
PGDip EJ
Q: Who can apply to study the PgDip EJ?
A: To apply for the Post Graduate Diploma in Economic Journalism you need to be employed in a news media organisation, or have been employed in a news media organisation. The course assumes knowledge about journalism practice, so it would be difficult if not impossible to do it without experience.
You do not need to have any specialised qualification to do the PgDip EJ, besides a recognised first degree. In some cases a sufficient level of prior learning will be regarded as sufficient for you to be accepted for this Post Graduate Diploma, but a first degree is preferred. The course teaches current journalists more about economics and therefore no economics background is required but journalism background is a requirement.
Q: Can a student use the PgDip EJ as stepping stone to pursue other postgraduate courses?
A:Â The PgDip EJ is a stand-alone qualification and is not designed as a bridge to any other qualification in the School of Journalism and Media Studies. However, a student is free to apply for entry into the MA or the BA Honours on completion. Each application either for the PgDip or for other courses in JMS is considered on its own merit.
Q: What do I need to apply?
A: You need the following:
1. A completed Rhodes University External Application Form
You can get a hard copy of the application forms by contacting The Registrar’s Division, Rhodes University, BOX 94 Grahamstown 6140, South Africa; +27 46 603 8111; Fax: +27 46 622 5049; Email: registrar@ru.ac.za OR you can do the ONLINE application
2. A certified copy of both your degree certificate and full transcript from your previous or current university
3. An up-to date resume (or CV) with at least two references and their current addresses.
4. A one-page motivation letter, addressed to the director of the Centre for Economic Journalism in Africa, BOX 94 BOX 94 Grahamstown 6140, South Africa, or the Post-Graduate Administrator, ammadmin@ru.ac.za.
The full application must be sent to the Registrar’s Division at Rhodes University (address above) and not to the School of Journalism and Media Studies.
All applications must reach the Registrar’s office by 30 October of the year preceding admission. Prospective students who need Financial Aid usually need to apply earlier.
Q: How are PgDip EJ applications decided on?
A:Â A successful application will meet all the entry requirements. It will also have a strong motivation. While the selection process is fair, equitable and sensitive to the transformation agenda at Rhodes University and South Africa generally, it is also a very rigorous process considering the large number of applicants. Prospective students are therefore advised to take particular care when preparing their applications.
Q: Is there any Financial Aid?
A:Â There are a limited number of scholarships and bursaries available. If you wish to be considered for such scholarships, fill in the general application form requesting Financial Aid, and include a one-page motivation letter with the completed form. NOTE: You need to apply and be given in principle acceptance by the University, in order to be eligible for consideration for these industry scholarships.
In addition, Financial Aid is available to South African students only. Inquire about this from the Registrar’s Division. Prospective students are advised to apply early if they want to be eligible for Financial Aid.
