Duties & Responsibilities

Internal/ External

Purpose of Role:

The Mining Engineering Manager will be accountable for overall strategic and operational site plant management including assessment of equipment needs and stock levels and the efficient planning and execution of all necessary maintenance and repair activities – thereby ensuring the most effective utilization of asset capacity and budget; Liaise regularly with the site team and local representatives from Liebherr, Caterpillar, Atlas Copco and other suppliers to secure optimum output from their respective equipment, including any oversight and management of their warranty and service support activities.

Manage maintenance and repair in the pit and workshop to achieve minimum ‘down time’, vigilant ‘trouble shooting’ and maximum cost-efficiency; Collaborate effectively with the Mining Production team and simultaneously grow, nurture, and develop our employees as individuals and as collaborative team members.

Core Work Outputs:

Effectively manage the commissioning, operation, maintenance and repair of the equipment fleet;

Control an annual maintenance, repairs and spare parts/inventory budget, Efficiently manage the procurement, delivery, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and repair of all necessary minor and ancillary plant, ensuring that this is done in a manner which is cost efficient and optimizes production outputs on the project; Coordinate with the Mine Manager and the Process Manager on all relevant matters concerning plant for the mine – including communication and agreement with Technical Manager – Mining to ensure the proper application of any relevant Group-level policies concerning plant selection, procurement, operation and maintenance, training and safety; Define departmental and individual KPIs clearly, and agree these with management; Manage, motivate and lead five direct reports (Planning; Tyre Equipment; Tracked Equipment; Drilling Equipment and Auxiliary equipment) and an overall team of around 350 Employees , Be an integrated member of the mine’s operational leadership group and co-operate harmoniously with all departments, as necessary; Ensure adequate staffing of the department, providing regular mentoring and coaching and training; Ensure that Engineering Management is behaviorally and functionally aligned appropriately with other departments in Tharisa Minerals, and in the site community as a whole, and is compliant with all relevant Company security and HSE processes and procedures; Ensure that maintenance and repairs are documented and recorded accurately and timeously, as are accident investigation reports; Undertake monthly performance reviews of all key departmental staff.

Desired Experience & Qualification

Minimum Requirements:

Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field; Government Certificate of Competency (MHS Act) (Mines and Works); Should have a minimum of 5 years exposure to surface mining fleets and 10 years of practical work experience in a mining / construction equipment environment, Computer literate (Word, excel, Power Point, etc.) and working knowledge of mine planning software, Valid drivers’ license.
